Coplay: The changing of seasons — first day of autumn is Sept. 22

The autumnal equinox is Sept. 22, marking the beginning of the fall season. Many earth-based religions and practices call this day Mabon.

The September moon is called the harvest moon.

Coplay Garden Club will next meet 7 p.m. Sept. 29 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 18 S. Third St.

A garden tip: Now is a great time to plant new perennials and shrubs. They have a better chance to establish themselves during the milder fall months than in spring.

Notes from the Coplay Borough Public Works Department: Brush pickup for 2022 ends Sept. 30; leaves will be picked up from Oct. 1 to Dec. 30; and grass will no longer be collected.

There is a drop-off location at 1 Bridge St. Drop-off hours will be 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

St. John’s Lutheran Church will hold a shepherd’s pie community pickup dinner 4-6 p.m. Oct. 1.

This is a free dinner, with donations requested.

Call Karen at 610-653-2816 to order. Proceeds will benefit the church renovation fund.

The Coplay Borough Park and Recreation Committee is planning a craft fair 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 1 and 2 at the Coplay Parkway pavilion.

If your pet has been misbehaving, St. John’s may have the remedy. It is holding its annual blessing of the animals 2 p.m. Oct. 2 in the parking lot by the church.

Coplay Saengerbund’s heritage committee is holding a Weinlesefest (grape dance) 3-6 p.m. Oct. 16. It is a celebration of the grape harvest and the making of new wine.

Music will be provided by the Emil Schanta Band.

There is an admission fee.

The Coplay Halloween Parade is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 18.

Coplay’s trick-or-treat night is 6-8 p.m. Oct. 28.

St. John’s is planning a yearlong celebration in 2023 for the its 150th anniversary.

The Coplay Scholarship Fund Committee’s 2022 scholarship program is accepting applications for two $500 scholarships for high school seniors residing in Coplay who plan to attend a college, university, technical school or the police academy.

Coplay Food Bank is open 8:30-10 a.m. the second Tuesday of every month. The food bank is located in the lower level of the municipal building, 98 S. Fourth St.

American Club of Coplay has restarted its monthly hoagie sales. Options include regular or tuna hoagies or ham and cheese or tuna sandwiches.

Coplay Athletic Club is under new management and is seeking new and renewal members. A gym membership costs $90 per year and $80 for renewals.

The gym is located on the second floor of the municipal building.
