Trojans roll over Red Rovers

The Parkland High School football team had been waiting for this game for over nine months. Following a loss in the District 11 semifinals to rival Emmaus last season, the Trojans have been preparing for the start of the 2022 season.

Following a season-opening win over Easton Friday, Parkland can surely feel satisfaction for how it played and what its season outlook can be. The Trojan offense put up 35 points before halftime to put into effect the mercy rule for the second half, and the Parkland defense allowed just 88 total yards to defeat the Rovers 42-0.

“We came to play,” said head coach Tim Moncman. “We had a great week of practice. We always talk about playing 48 minutes and we did that. Both sides of the ball really had a good night all around and that is exactly what you want to see out of your team. It makes it feel even better that it happened in the first game.”

Field position was of a great strength for the Trojans in first half, especially their first three possessions. Trey Tremba, who finished with 65 yards rushing on the night, scored two touchdowns within the first three drives, following a 28-yard scoring run by Nakhi Bullock that capped a 49-yard drive to open up the scoring on the night.

Tremba set up Parkland’s fourth touchdown of the half for running mate and freshman Marquez Wimberly, who scored from three yards away to push the lead to 28-0 with 6:46 remaining in the second quarter.

Wimberly then had a highlight-reel run of 64 yards to cap the scoring in the first half and send the Trojans into the locker room for halftime ahead 35-0.

“He’s not only a great football player, but he’s a great kid,” Moncman said. “We’re going to start mixing him in. Tremba is our workhorse. Having (Wimberly) to go to also is great. We can put them both in the backfield sometimes. It allows us to do a lot of things. He did a good job tonight and really showed how he can play.”

Parkland’s defense remained stout all game and did not allow Easton to even sniff the end zone. The Trojans gave up just six first downs all game and forced the Red Rovers to punt seven times.

Quarterback Luke Spang completed every pass and finished 9-for-9 for 145 yards and a touchdown. Jack Harrison caught four passes for 106 yards and Jendel Sanchez had a receiving touchdown.

Parkland hits the road on Friday night to take on another undefeated team in Nazareth. The Blue Eagles defeated Dieruff 48-6 last weekend.
