Emmaus Police Detpartmen hosts Family Fun night/open house Aug. 2

It will be fun, fun, fun at the Emmaus Police Department Family Fun Night and Open House 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 2. Sit in an emergency vehicle and meet first responders, take a turn upsetting a police officer or a member of Emmaus Borough Council in the dunk tank, grab treats at Rita’s and the Macungie Mountain Herb food truck or a hot dog served by members of borough council and borough staff. Talk to juvenile probation officers and members of the Lehigh County Drug Task Force. Meet members of the Environmental Advisory Council. Take a tour of the police department or watch a K-9 demonstration by Sgt. Vincent Murante and his partner Ronnie. Be entertained by the sounds of summer by DJ Dutch and meet a special guest or two.

The Emmaus Garden Club will meet noon Aug. 2 at Faith Presbyterian Church, 3002 N. Second St. The program will be “Pass the Dandelion, Please.” An original vintage play by Frank Laudenslager, former member and president of the Emmaus Garden Club in the 1980s and 1990s, will be presented by the Emmaus Garden Club Thespians. Come out and see your friends act and sing in this entertaining show. Be sure to listen carefully for the play on words and other comedy elements.

Supposedly any resemblance to garden club members is strictly coincidental, but you may leave wondering about that. Guests are always welcome. For more information, call 610-395-0903.

For early childhood parents/caregivers: Plan on being part of the library’s first Family Place Workshop series. The free parent-child workshops are coming in August at the Emmaus Public Library, 11 E. Main St. The library was named a Family Place Library and received training and a grant to provide more resources and support for early childhood development.

As a result, the library has acquired loads of great new toys, books and multimedia materials and will soon hold the first of what will be twice-yearly workshops for children and parents/caregivers to attend together.

The workshops are designed to be interactive, informal, play-based and fun. The schedule in August is Aug. 2, Early Literacy with Emmaus Public Library Youth Service Librarian Sue Monroe; Aug. 9, Child Development with pediatricians Dr. Kenneth J. Toff and Dr. Laurie A. Cohen from Children’s HealthCare; Aug. 16, Music and Movement with St. Ann’s School music teacher Ariel Scholz; Aug. 23, Nutrition with registered dietitian Heather Kistler and Aug. 30, Early Intervention with Melissa Vandever of Easter Seals’ Make the First Five Count program.

The workshops will take place 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Margaret Knoll Gardner lecture room. Space is limited, Register at the library, call 610-965-9284 or visit emmauspl@cliu.org. Include the number of parents/caregivers and the names and ages of children attending.

The next Art at Emmaus Public Library program is a mixed media workshop with Maryann Riker 11 a.m. Aug. 13.

The Summer Reading Club for children, teens and adults, Oceans of Possibilities, continues through Aug. 13. If you haven’t signed up yet, there is still time: Emmaus.beanstack.org.

The Summer Reading Club’s closing event is a Luau party and Moana, 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 20 in the Margaret Knoll Gardner lecture room. There will be a free screening of Disney’s Moana and a Luau-inspired party. The event for all ages features snacks and fun. Drop in and wave aloha to another great summer reading program.

The concerts in the Emmaus Community Park continue 6 p.m. through August. Entertaining Aug. 14 is Smooth Retsina Glow; Aug. 21: Tookany Creek Bluegrass Band and Aug. 28: The Scott Marshall Band.

Burn will entertain Aug. 12 and Audio Files Aug. 26 at Tunes on the Triangle 6:30 p.m. at Triangle Park in Emmaus.

The Emmaus Community Park pool is open noon to 8 p.m. through Aug. 28. It will be closed Aug. 29 will reopen for the Labor Day weekend noon to 8 p.m. Sept. 2, 3 and 4 and noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 5. Zumba is offered 8:45 a.m. Saturdays in the Arts Pavilion. Cardio drumming, which is open for all ages, is offered 6:30 p.m. Mondays in the Arts pavilion. Some supplies are needed to attend the sessions.

Mopar Madness of the Lehigh Valley will sponsor a Cruise Night 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 13 and 27 at Emmaus Community Park, 175 Shimerville Road. All cruise nights are weather permitting. The Shelter House membership picnic will be held 6 p.m. Aug. 17 in the Shelter House pavilion, 601 S. Fourth St. The picnic is a catered supper; there is no charge, just let the Shelter House know if you are attending so they can give a count to the caterer. The Emmaus Historical Society and Museum, 218 Main St., is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Stop by for a visit and learn more about this history-filled community.

Monthly membership meetings and programs are scheduled to resume 7 p.m. Sept. 21 at St. John’s Lutheran Church Parish Hall, 501 Chestnut St., Emmaus. The first program will be “The Circus is coming to the Valley” presented by Bob Good. All are welcome to attend.
