Laird K.S. Haas

Laird K.S. Haas, Ph.D., 93, of Orefield, died July 15, 2022, in Lehigh Valley Hospital.

Born May 2, 1929, in Heidelberg Township, he was the son of the late Russell H. and Arlene M. B. (Semmel) Haas.

He married Delores J. (Reich) Haas in 1950 in Sacramento, Calif. while a sergeant in the U.S. Army.

They were married for 71 years.

He served during the Korean War, and then received high honors from the University of California, Berkeley graduating with a Master of Science degree in physics and a Doctorate in engineering science.

At Berkeley, he was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society for his high academic achievements.

He was proud to work at the former Bell Labs, Reading and Allentown, where he was part of different teams that developed the Picturephone®, various vacuum tubes, IMPATT diodes and much more.

While there for 30 years, he was recognized for his outstanding work with the Distinguished Technical Staff Award that noted his demonstration of high competence in a variety of technical skills.

He was a loving husband and father, a fun-loving grandfather and great-grandfather, and a witty and loyal brother and friend, who will be greatly missed.

Throughout his life, he was a curious and independent experimenter, who shared his love for and understanding of science and the natural world with others.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son Jeffrey K. Haas and his wife, Debbie, of Orefield; daughter Susanne B.H. Katz and her husband, Marty, of Coopersburg; siblings Darwin R. Haas and his wife, Grace, of Orefield, Wayne L. Haas and his wife, Carol Ann, of Kempton, and Marilyn E. Werley and her husband, Roger, of Kutztown; grandchildren Matthew, Talia and Eliana; and great-grandchildren Devan and Sage.

He was predeceased by a sister Shirley A. Wisser and her husband, Thomas.

A private graveside service will be held at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown. There will be no calling hours.

A celebration of life service will follow at a later date.

Contributions in his memory may be made to a veterans’ support organization of one’s choice.
