Catasauqua mayor lauds efforts of borough police

During the June 17 Catasauqua Borough Council meeting, Mayor Barbara Schlegel thanked Catasauqua Police Department members for their rapid response to the recent discharge of a firearm at the municipal park.

Police got there in three minutes, she noted, and apprehended the two actors involved the firearm discharge.

When queried about dealing with a shooting incident, Schlegel reported cameras at the park might cost $30,000. She also noted the addition of two full-time officers to the current force to increase a police presence would cost about $200,000 annually.

In other council matters, there was an apparent draft resolution to limit resident comment time to three to five minutes per person.

Councilman Cameron Smith asked who initiated the proposed change to limit resident input at meetings and noted this change should have been run by the general government committee to advance the resolution.

There also was reportedly a resolution to eliminate the monthly council workshop meetings. This would mean there would be only the monthly council regular meeting.

The reasons for this proposal included redundancy and that other municipalities do not have workshop meetings.

There was a brief discussion of the borough’s rental inspection fee ordinance that reportedly had incomplete information, causing the vote to be tabled to next month.

Council announced plans to hold a special meeting, which was set to take place July 5, to discuss the hiring of a consultant to begin a search for a borough manager. Borough Manager Stephen Travers previously tendered his resignation. He expects to vacate the manager role around Sept. 9.

Also on the July 5 agenda was an executive session regarding the upcoming police contract.

In similar news, Treasurer Sandra Gyecsek recently tendered her resignation. Gyecsek reportedly departs from her role Aug. 31.

The next Catasauqua Borough Council meeting is 7 p.m. July 25. It is a hybrid meeting, with both in-person and virtual options. Visit catasauqua.org for the call-in and access code numbers to participate virtually. To attend in person, go to the municipal complex, located at 90 Bridge St.
