Stahl’s Pottery Festival is June 18

For 35 years, Stahl’s Pottery has been celebrating the art of Pennsylvania German redware at the pottery site, 6826 Corning Road, Zionsville. The 35th annual summer Stahl’s Pottery Festival will be held June 18. The event features tours of the site, contemporary pottery and delicious food. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the event is rain or shine. There is an admission charge; guests under 18 enter at no charge and parking is free.

At the festival, learn about the production of redware pottery as carried out by Charles Stahl and his descendants, Thomas, Isaac and Russell Stahl. Tour the clay storage room and the workroom where the potters labored from 1934 to 1956. See the round, stone, beehive, wood-fired kiln where pieces were fired. Inside the house museum, discover unique pieces of Stahl’s Pottery as well as family furnishings and traditions.

Thirty talented potters will present their unique creations to view and purchase.

In addition, to celebrate the 35th anniversary, new items are available at the collectibles stand including T-shirts, hats and a special 35th anniversary redware ornament.

Turning on the wheel and raku firing will be demonstrated, and there will be several drawings throughout the day to win a piece of handmade pottery. Don’t forget to try a homemade barbecue, fresh cut French fries or a scrumptious home baked good. Visit the Thomas and Alice Stahl house to sample dew drops, a homemade ice cream treat that Thomas Stahl produced and sold.

In 1987, descendants of Thomas Stahl purchased the Stahl’s Pottery site. They formed a nonprofit organization, Stahl’s Pottery Preservation Society, Inc. and have been holding an annual pottery festival ever since. The goal of the society is to preserve the historic site known as Stahl’s Pottery and to educate visitors about the art of Pennsylvania German redware pottery.

Enjoy the country setting in the hills of Powder Valley as you explore the site.

All funds raised at the festival are utilized for preservation and interpretation of the site. Visit the website for more information and directions at www.stahlspottery.org. For questions about the festival, call 484-306-3868.
