Proclamation Presentation to Cpt. John Bergstresser

During the May 5 Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners meeting, John Bergstresser was presented with a proclamation for his years of service in Lower Macungie Township as a fire police captain. Bergstresser was a captain of the fire police for 24 years. His work could include any hours in the day or at night as the fire police must be available 24 hours a day.

Dave Nosal, fire chief of the Lower Macungie Fire Department said “firemen are often regarded as heroes by the public but in his eyes, the fire police are our heroes. They are our front line!” They are the ones that direct traffic and look out for the safety of the public during an emergency event.

The Subaru Ciocca car dealership is making an improvement at their Hamilton Boulevard lot. They are improving this area where cars are parked but it will be paved with landscaping, fencing and will include a sign “Welcome to Lower Macungie Township.” Resolution 2022-31 was approved for the land development.

Wildlands Conservancy is seeking to replace a vehicular bridge through a Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant. It’s a single-lane bridge which is the only public access to the area. Designs are being considered to improve this bridge.

Lower Macungie Township offers tax assistance to seniors and others in need at the Wescosville Recreation Center. AARP has expressed their gratitude for assisting senior citizens and others. There were over 200 citizens helped this year with 12 volunteers offering their time.

There is a slight modification proposed for a Spring Creek property, Lot 16. It allows for a loop to be created within the already developed property which will improve internal circulation of traffic, particularly trucks.

David Bonette from the Environmental Advisory Council spoke about the township joining up with the state to fight climate change. There are suggestions from the state for local usage such as checking out solid waste management, energy usage and vehicle management. There is a free one year program including all the materials necessary to begin this in the community. An action plan is established with research materials as well as a college intern to help manage this project.

An executive session was held about land acquisition.

There was a request made to change the name of the Church Lane baseball field which is presently the Emmaus High School field. Through an agenda modification, this was accomplished. The new name is the Joseph Mastroianni Baseball Field in honor of the late Mastroianni, who was very involved with local baseball. President Brian Higgins worked with him as the head of Lower Macungie Youth Association. Mastroianni loved baseball and it was a very large part of his life. The request was approved.

A request was made for a plaque to be placed in a park for Warren Whitney. Whitney was very involved in gardening for the township. The request comes from his wife Phyllis. This was approved.
