Hawks battling for a district spot

Your always want to be playing your best toward the end of a season and Bethlehem Catholic hopes that’s the case for their baseball team as the season heads toward the home stretch.

The Hawks (7-8) have won three out of their last four games to push themselves in postseason contention with five games left on the calendar.

The defending district champs have a path laid out in front of them to clinch a spot in districts, as well as battle for one of the final spots in the EPC tournament depending on how well they close out the schedule.

Becahi only needs to split two of their final four league contests to solidify a spot in districts, but they also want to make sure they keep improving.

“On top of being young, we have faced a lot of adversity this season,” said Becahi head coach Matt Corsi. “The team has really come together during it all and we are starting to play our best baseball. We always say you want to play your best baseball toward the end of the season and into the postseason. Hopefully we are trending in that direction.”

The Hawks face Liberty (15-1) and Dieruff (4-10) this week, as they look to at least split this week’s slate. Any victory from here on out will keep adding to Becahi’s district power rating, which could also be used as another tool in their arsenal to qualify for the postseason. Finishing .500 or better overall in the league will garner automatic qualification for the postseason, but staying inside the top six of the 4A power ratings will also land them a berth.

Currently, the Hawks are fifth in the power ratings and have a comfortable advantage over teams like Northwestern, North Schuylkill and Jim Thorpe in that category, but taking care of their own business on the diamond is what’s paramount for the team, which is also struggling with injuries at the moment.

“I think one to two more wins will keep us in the top six in points,” said Corsi, “but you can’t be sure till the end of the season. The young kids have really developed over the season, but now we are dealing with a ton of injuries on top of it all. We just keep plugging away and taking it one game at a time.”

Liberty (15-1) has kept annihilating the competition, as they’re winners of 14 straight and have shutout their last four opponents. The’ ‘Canes look to keep that up this week with Becahi and Freedom on tap.

The Patriots (6-10) need to win their last four games of the season in order to qualify for districts.

They have Easton (11-4), Liberty and Stroudsburg (7-9) this week in a difficult stretch of games.
