Barbara Dorn Hvizdos

Barbara Dorn Hvizdos, 88, of Emmaus, died March 16, 2022. She was the wife of Leonard J. Hvizdos for 66 years. Born in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of Marie Dorn and Brig. Gen. James S. Gallagher.

While she and her husband were high school sweethearts they did not marry until after she attained her bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University School of Nursing, Pittsburgh. She was proud of her degree and profession and while she left the field for many years to raise her children, she did return to it later in life. She raised all seven of her children with the determination and expectation they would all graduate with college degrees.

A devout Catholic, she was a member of St. Ann Roman Catholic Church and School, Emmaus, where she faithfully attended Mass. She was a member of the St. Ann’s Women’s Alliance, serving a term as president, was a volunteer in the school’s cafeteria and in the gift shop at Sacred Heart Hospital. She enjoyed being a den mother to Cub Pack 80 for a few years.

She was very adventuresome. Afraid of water, she rode whitewater rapids in Colorado and loved river boat trips. The Delta Queen was her favorite. She rode a wagon on the Oregon trail and hula danced in Hawaii. She loved the excitement of Mexico City and she climbed to the top of Machu Picchu, Peru. She traveled to Europe and the Caribbean but said Alaska was the only place to which she would move.

She waltzed and polkaed with her lifetime partner and attended many Viennese Waltz weekends. She could play bridge for hours. Her holiday meals were legendary. She made the best apple pie and loved the old Hollywood musicals.

She is survived by her devoted husband; children, Carolyn (Stephen) Wentzel, Kathryn (Anthony) Longo, Alyssa (Monte) DeFrances, Lorraine Douglass, Dianne and Stephen (Susanne); 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, David (Marilyn) and one grandchild.

Arrangements were made by the Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home, Emmaus.
