Sara Louise Meminger
Sara Louise (Reddig) Meminger, 91, died peacefully Feb. 5, 2022, in Florida. She was the wife of James S. Meminger for nearly 70 years. She and her husband moved to Emmaus in her 30s and to Florida (part time) in her late 60s. She was fortunate to remain in their lovely Florida home for the last 20 years.
Born in Reamstown, she graduated from Cocalico High School and Elizabethtown College, after which she secured a position at the Lancaster General Hospital as a laboratory technician.
In her early 30s, Sara (Sally) was recruited to serve the GOP, which she faithfully and fiercely supported until recent years. She first served as co-chair and then chair of voter registration. She ran the campaign for a state senator and once he won his office, moved to be his senatorial aide. Over her 60 years in politics, she worked tirelessly to secure elected positions for state and federal candidates as well as many presidential candidates.
She was a member of the Executive Committee of Lehigh County, president of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Republican Party, appointed to the election board of Lehigh County and served as the Lehigh County coordinator of the presidential election in the late 1980s. Upon moving full time to Florida, the Lehigh Valley League of Women Voters gave her a special tribute.
Over her years of political activism, she was fortunate to shake hands with Gov. Dick Thornburgh, President Ronald Reagan, Gov. Tom Ridge, President George W. Bush, First Lady Barbara Bush, President George W. Bush, Sen. Arlen Spector, Sen. John Heinz and many others. She remained proud of the work of United States Senator Pat Toomey, former United States representative Charlie Dent and PA State Sen. Pat Browne and carefully followed their careers. She called her commitment to furthering the party’s voice an obsession and she served the party well. She was elected to be a Pennsylvania delegate to the Republican National Convention three times.
She was a member of the Emmaus Newcomers’ Club, Emmaus Library Association, Emmaus High School Booster Club and Allentown First Presbyterian Church.
Known to many as “Sara Louise” she was proud to be a “cousin” member of the Grimes Family Cousins, who met regularly and supported one of the country’s longest known family reunions which lasted for over 100 years.
She loved antiques and at one time was managing four outlet locations for her sales, including one at Renningers in Lancaster County. She was a member of the National Button Club and had a very large and unique collection that she enjoyed presenting to numerous groups.
She had a thirst for knowledge and information. Always an avid reader, she was reading books and a member of two different book clubs until the day she died.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Dr. Susan and her husband, John B. Frieling, Louise Reddig, Ann and her husband, T. Mitchell McCauley; grandchildren, Brook E. Frieling, James B. Frieling (Elizabeth), James M. McCauley, Katelyn L. McCauley; a sister, Phyllis J. Vouras.
