A 1960 graduate of Parkland High School, he faithfully and honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Cuban-Missile Crisis era.

A distinguished marksman, he was assigned to the rifle and pistol team competing throughout the United States where he tied a national record in rapid fire competition.
