Field Hockey rolls over ESN

Lost in all of the hoopla of Emmaus High School field hockey head coach Sue Butz-Stavin’s milestone victory was the overall dominant play of her team in the game.

The Green Hornets (13-0 overall, 9-0 EPC) remained undefeated with another win in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference that wasn’t close throughout, defeating East Stroudsburg North 12-0 last Tuesday, October 5 on the Memorial Field turf at Emmaus High School.

It was the 29th consecutive win for the program, and it happened just the way Butz-Stavin drew it up.

“Our game plan was to even out the scoring throughout each quarter and keep everyone engaged in the game,” said Butz-Stavin. “It was kind of tough because they kept six people back behind the 25-yard line to help their defense. We wanted to draw [penalty] corners and get shots off on corners and take it from there. We wanted to keep the game as competitive as we could for as long as we could to get good experience for everyone.”

Emmaus scored four goals in the opening quarter and then two more in the second quarter to hold a 6-0 lead at halftime. The Green Hornets then evened the scoring with three goals in each of the third and fourth quarters for the 12-0 final total.

Ava Zerfass scored three first-quarter goals while Rachel Herbine and Lexi Kociban did the scoring in the second. Herbine added two more in the third quarter to give Emmaus two players with hat tricks.

“To see an even balance in scoring and different players contributing is what we always want,” Butz-Stavin said. “Our team does better when everyone gets involved and stays attentive in the game. The girls do a good job of that.”

Sophomore goalie Emma Cari was not forced into action as the Emmaus defense prevented any shots on cage.

Emmaus won three games last week in a four-day span, all in the East Penn Conference. Victories over Easton, Liberty and Whitehall highlighted the week. The Green Hornets take on Nazareth and Parkland this week in the final week of the regular season. Both teams are right behind Emmaus in the standings with Nazareth being the only other unbeaten in the conference.

The EPC Tournament begins with the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
