Richard Earl Cross

Richard Earl Cross, 77, of Delaware, died Aug. 19, 2021, at his home in Magnolia, Del.

His wife of 54 years is Nancy Snow Cross of Wakefield, Mass. They met at Lycoming College, Williamsport.

Married in 1967, the couple resided for 19 years in the Greater Scranton Area, 21 years in the Lehigh Valley, 10 years at Smith Mountain Lake, Va., and most recently in Magnolia.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Dr. Albert James and Carolyn Lansing Cross.

He graduated from the former Scranton Central High School, Scranton, and majored in mathematics at Lycoming College.

He was a member of Trinity Ecumenical Parish, Smith Mountain Lake, and was a proud U.S. Air Force veteran who served on active duty during the Vietnam War.

He provided contract services to the printing industry for more than 30 years and was also the owner of Cross Coin Company.

Throughout his career, he developed extensive expertise in the history, minting and printing of U.S. coins and currency.

He was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists, the Scranton Coin Club, and the numismatic specialty organization Early American Coppers.

An avid sports fan, he enjoyed antiques, numismatics and related history.

He especially enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others.

In 2004, he was the recipient of the Frank Gasparro Award presented by the Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists at the annual convention to Pennsylvania’s Outstanding Numismatist.

Gasparro was the U.S. Mint’s 10th Chief Engraver.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter Jennifer Cross Reyer and son-in-law Aaron Reyer of the Lehigh Valley; twin brother AJ Cross and sister-in-law Joan Scott Cross of Scranton; brother Lawrence Friend Cross, Newton, N.J.; sister Susan Lynn Cross of Worthington, Ohio; sister-in-law Susan Snow Atwater of Collierville, Tenn.; grandson Kyle Aaron Reyer; and several nieces and nephews.

A service in celebration of his life and officiated by the Rev. Dr. Philip A. Bouknight, pastor of Trinity Ecumenical Parish, will be held noon Sept. 10 in the James Wilson Funeral Home, 143 Gravity Road, Lake Ariel.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service Friday.

The family requests masks be worn for visitation and the service.

Interment with military honors will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, South Sterling.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Ecumenical Parish, 40 Lakemount Drive, Moneta, Va. 24121, noting memorial gift fund on the check.
