Robert Frank Zalokar

Robert Frank Zalokar, 90, of Macungie, died Aug. 31, 2021, in his home. He was the husband of Aldonna (Blaskevica) Zalokar. They were married for 68 years. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Zadnik) Zalokar.

He attended Collinwood High School, Cleveland, Ohio and earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from General Motors Institute in 1954 after writing a bachelor’s thesis.

He started his career at Cleveland Diesel in Cleveland and moved to Mack Trucks in 1959 in the research department at the Mack Engine and Transmission plant in Plainfield, N.J. He moved to Allentown in 1970 and was responsible for building the engineering development and test center, now the Customer Center and Mack Museum. He attended the advanced management program at Harvard Business School. After 30 years he retired as executive vice president, product and engineering.

He served as a trustee for the Allentown Osteopathic Hospital, now St. Luke’s and as a trustee for his college, now Kettering University.

He and his wife traveled the United States, playing golf and bridge and reading. After retirement, they spent their winters in Green Valley, Ariz. Their biggest pleasure was their family and many gatherings at their home on the side of South Mountain.

He was successful in everything he tried, writing, pastel painting, model trains and storytelling to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife; children, Laura Ann (Lee) Fetzer, Debra Lynn Storm, Patrice Marie (Kevin) Hill, Barbara Lee (Greg) Jones, Lisa Ellen (Matt) von Nieda and Robert Jr.; grandchildren, Lynn (Mike) Weller, Ellen (Kevin) McMonagle, Anna (Weston) Garton, Sarah (Chad) Felts, Ryan (Tara) Hill, Andrew and Lukas Hill, Sam and Teddy Jones, Olivia, Simon and Isaac von Nieda, Julia and Aiden; great-grandchildren, Maybelle, Clara and Gabriel Weller, Lilly, Jolene, Hank and George McMonagle, Zachary and Garrett Hill and Leo Felts.

Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in his memory.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Sept. 18 in the Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., 250 Main St., Emmaus. Visitation will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the funeral home.
