Joan Frances May

Joan Frances May, 87, formerly of Allentown, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Manalapan, N.J., died June 22, 2021, in The Pavilion of Waukegan Nursing Home, Waukegan, Ill.

She was the wife of the late William Ralph May.

Born Jan. 19, 1934, in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Thomas E. and Edna M. (Moore) Devine.

A graduate of the Mt. Sinai Hospital School of Nursing in New York City, N.Y., she was a registered nurse at Coney Island Hospital, Brooklyn, and Pine Brook Care Center, N.J.

She was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, Orefield, where she served as a Eucharistic minister and lector, and was a member of the H.O.P.E. Committee and the Women’s Guild.

A past member of Bishop’s Cullen’s Commission for Women, she was a past captain and exempt member of Englishtown-Manalapan First Aid Squad.

Her survivors include sons John A. May (Ginger) of Illinois, Christopher T. May of Florida, and Douglas W. May (Josie) of Texas; siblings Thomas E. Devine (Ann), and Patricia Fallon Bergh (Larry), all of Tennessee, Mary C. Ruffe (Robert) of New Jersey and Edna M. Purcer (Charles) of Virginia; grandson Jackson R. May of Kansas; many nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was predeceased by a sister, Lorraine DeVoy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. July 23 at St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, 1879 Applewood Drive, Orefield. The Rev. Father William F. Krlis will be celebrant.

Family and friends may pay their respects 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday in the church.

Private interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery, Long Island, N.Y.
