Kamp for Kids sponsors camp for military families on Memorial Day

Special to The Press

Kamp for Kids hosted a camp for military families May 28-31 at the Inn of Hope, Kempton.

The camp included activities fishing, campfires and carnival games.

Other outdoor activities, such as swimming were also planned, but due to the inclement weather, bowling and a trip to a recreation center were substituted.

While the camp’s activities were mainly geared toward the children there were activities for the adults, as well.

“We do a special date night,” Penni Morton, director of Kamp for Kids, said. “We put the kids in another room and give them a pizza party and then we have a fancy meal for the adults.”

Kamp for Kids is a nonprofit that focuses on providing camp experiences for children at risk and children with autism.

This was the first time the organization sponsored a camp for military families.

This camp was also a homecoming of sorts as Kamp for Kids returned to the Inn of Hope, the place where its first camps were held.

Camp Director Tim Morton, a graduate of Northwestern Lehigh, also returned to the area where he grew up.

“We started here but then we kind of outgrew it as the camp grew,” Morton said. “We started with just the youth camp, but then it just grew so fast we had to find a bigger camp.

“We thought the military camp would be good to start here, since this is our first year doing it but we used every room. It was a little crowded.”

Kamp for Kids will be hosting two more camps this summer and will be continuing to have military family camps in the future, though they may need to find a new location as their camps continue to grow.
