Hornets hand Hershey 19-4 loss

The Emmaus High School boys lacrosse team is on a roll to start the 2021 season. In his first full year as head coach, Stu Speicher is getting just the start he had hoped for as the Green Hornets have won their first four games, all by double-digit goals against Moravian Academy, Bethlehem Catholic, Saucon Valley and Hershey.

“Our goal is always to try and win the next game, so it’s exciting to start the season 4-0,” said Speicher. “It’s a credit to how well the players have adjusted to safely playing a varsity sport during the pandemic, and enjoying any opportunity they have to be together as teammates.”

In its latest game Emmaus took care of Hershey High School 19-4 in a nonconference game last Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field. The Trojans are a formidable foe that played in the Class 2A state final in 2019. They scored two quick goals within the opening three minutes.

But Emmaus answered by scoring six straight goals and then outscoring Hershey 9-1 in the second quarter to take a 15-3 lead into halftime.

“We had great composure from our team, and they remained confident even when down early,” Speicher said. “Aidan Garrett and Gannon Mesko consistently winning faceoffs created a situation where we could bounce back and take control of the game. It’s a small sample size, but of the four games we’ve played I have to say that this is the one I’ve been the happiest with and their energy level.”

The Emmaus offense has been clicking on all cylinders of late, and Speicher credits the abilities of the coaches around him on his staff for the early success.

“We are very fortunate to have Marc Feldman coaching our offense and stressing the unselfishness that is an important key to victory,” said Speicher. “We’re a team that recognizes the goal scorer is only successful when all of his teammates are doing their jobs and allowing the offense to flourish.”

Connor Flok led the offense with five goals, followed by three each from Zach Whalen and Adam Monek. Cade Speicher tallied two goals and two assists. Zack Younker, Justin Hollinger, Logan Mains, Gannon Mesko, Nate Seidel and Liam Porecca all finished with a goal. Will Barber contributed three assists and Younker added six.

“We’ve had great senior leadership, and outstanding contributions from players who traditionally do not see their names in the boxscores,” Speicher said. “On defense, seniors Connor Carter, Tyler Clokey, Matt Dapper, and Zach Palinkas have been fantastic in setting the tone at both practices and games.”
