New S. Whitehall commissioner will likely mean new taxes, spending

To the Editor:

In 2006, the Pennsylvania Legislature passed Act 1, which was intended to slow the growth of property taxes by requiring school districts that want to raise taxes above a certain percentage to either seek voter approval through a referendum or ask for an exception from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

As a Parkland School Board director, prospective South Whitehall commissioner, David Kennedy’s school board raised taxes nine of the last 10 years, four of which required Act 1 exceptions and/or a referendum vote.

Instead of taking a tax hike vote to the people, Kennedy’s board applied to the state for the exceptions.

Now Mr. Kennedy wants to be commissioner of South Whitehall Township and is already talking about spending your money, on port-a-potties.

That’s right, port-a-potties.

Mr. Kennedy’s campaign, which includes this tax-and-spend agenda, has been endorsed and supported by current Commissioners Kelly and Wolk.

This should not come as a shock to anyone as Kelly and Wolk voted against approving a balanced budget this year and against investing in our small businesses, the lifeblood of our local economy.

We simply can’t afford David Kennedy.
