Shredding success

The April 10 shredding event sponsored by state Rep. Zach Mako, R-183rd, and Northampton Borough has been hailed a success, as witnessed by the lines of vehicles and the amount of documents handed over by motorists.

The event, held in the parking lot of Northampton Banquet & Event Center, 1601 Laubach Ave., was for borough residents only and collected paper and other documents.

Mako was on hand greeting residents as they lined up their cars through the length of the parking lot. He said the event continues to grow, highlighting a second shredding truck was needed this year.

Richter Mobile Shredding Company, from Souderton, was contracted to handle the paper and document shredding. Richter was very efficient as employees completed their duties.

Mako said he expected as many as 250 cars would go through during the two-hour event. Mako was delighted at the large turnout.

The effort included help from Northampton Fire Police and the borough’s street department. Northampton Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst was also present to assist in directing the activities and, at times, rolled up his sleeves to help.

The annual shredding event began in 2017 and was started by Mako. It allows residents to have their important, yet no-longer-needed private documents shredded at no cost.

Mako said he is planning a similar event this fall in Slatington and a return shredding event in 2022 in Northampton.
