Spring in bloom at Flower Tent in New Tripoli

Spring flowers flaunted their Easter pastels under yellow and white striped tents all across the Lehigh Valley even as temperatures plunged in recent days.

Just before the spring holiday, customers stopped to make their floral purchases.

The Flower Tents have become a familiar sign of spring and a convenient place to buy a bloom or two.

“Without a doubt, the hyacinths are the most popular plants for the Easter holiday,” said Tim Devers, who was manning the Flower Tent in New Tripoli, and glad to be back in business. “Everyone wants their fragrance in the house.”

The tents typically appear at Easter and remain until Father’s Day in June.

“Patio pots and hanging baskets for Mother’s Day are the biggest sellers of the entire season,” Devers said. “We also do a lot of vegetable and bedding plants.”

“We did not do Easter last year but today’s been really busy,” Devers said on the Saturday before Easter. “It’s been steady from 8 a.m.”

Devers said many people stop to shop after they attend church services on Easter Sunday.

A short hiatus follows until April 22 when the Flower Tent remains open seven days a week.

The particularly chilly weather the week before Easter required Devers to take special measures to safeguard the plants.

“When the weather is this cold, we have to use blankets and heaters as protection,” Devers said. “It’s a much tougher job than it seems.”
