Sergent breaks Liberty pool record

An attempt to qualify for districts in the 200 medley relay inspired Liberty swimmer Brooke Sergent to go for a pool record in the 100 fly, which she broke in 59.08, during the Hurricanes’ meet against Freedom on Feb. 20 at Liberty.

“I just felt really motivated that day because for the relay, we were trying to get in the top eight, and I went a 26. And then I’m like, I can go under a minute if I can go a 26,” she said. “I felt really happy because I was trying to get the pool record since last year.”

With only one meet left before districts, the Hurricane sophomore didn’t know if getting under 1:00 in the fly would be possible because of previous multiple COVID-19-related winter sports suspensions.

“I went 1:00 last year, and I started this season at 1:04. Now I’m at a low 1:03, but I’m going to work on my underwaters and my starts,” Sergent said on Feb. 16, days before she broke the record.

Sergent was the bronze medalist in the fly at districts last year.

“I want to try and medal this year in second or first,” she said.

The District XI Swimming Championships are scheduled for March 6-7 at Parkland High School.
