LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Theater Review: ‘Lucky Lindy’ lands in The Pines

In response to the harsh winter, The Pines Dinner Theatre has turned its stage into a get-away tropical island inhabited through May 9 by adventurers and other want-to-be-famous characters, including an aviator nicknamed “Lucky Lindy.”

“Lucky Lindy’s Not So Lucky Landing,” with its repartee and double-entendres, is billed as a “high-flying, interactive comedy,” as in the audience is part of the action.

It’s nothing too complicated: just being sworn in as members of the island’s Merriwethers Explorers Society, and joining in a few choruses of “hookie, hookie, hookie lau.”

Did I mention “The Dead Guy” in the audience during most of the show? OK, so it’s also a whodunnit.

The book and music are by Pines Artistic Director Oliver Blatt, who also directs.

The Lindy character (Zach Petrovich) is based on Charles Lindbergh, who gained fame and fortune by flying solo across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris in 1927.

During the Jan. 23 performance seen for this review, Petrovich’s character bore no similarity to the much more restrained, real-life Lindbergh, but the actor creates a bombastic presence of his own that provides energy and humor to the whacky five-member cast.

Syd Stauffer is a breath of fresh air as Mabel Johnson, the outpost’s greeter, maintenance woman and provider of all the guests’ needs at the lavish outpost. She’s vibrant, affable and authentic.

Kristofer Wills and his wife Jennifer are mainstays at The Pines, and for good reason. Their characters always have strong personalities, and such is the case with their portrayals of Jon Pierre Fritzhoff and Henrietta Von Viernerlichten.

A centerpiece of the play is the star-struck, not-so-talented wannabe character, Lina Lamore. Supplying the talent needed to depict this jazzy character is Leslie Rodig, whose high-pitched voice, cavorting and flirtations never lost energy.

A word about the set: It has been expanded to include the far ends of the thrust stage, providing visual variety and more space onstage for the actors. Its embellishments also create the feel of the times and the would-be tropics. One space is dedicated to a telegraph room that includes a working teletype machine and a large Morse Code hanging that’s an integral part of the plot.
