LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Seventh time is a charm for Lady Trojans

A game that was originally scheduled for February 4 and then moved around to seven different dates, was finally played between crosstown rivals in girls basketball Tuesday. Between weather and COVID protocol, the Parkland-Emmaus girls basketball game kept getting pushed back from its original date.

In a low-scoring affair, the Trojans used a 6-2 run late in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Green Hornets and hang on for a 33-27 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference game Tuesday night at Emmaus High School.

Trojan head coach Ed Ohlson was pleased with the final result, but with the postseason looming shortly, he expects his team to pick it up.

“We weren’t very focused and I didn’t think we played our best,” said Ohlson. “There’s no excuses, but to their credit, it’s been tough, especially this game with scheduling. Will we play, then we don’t, then we’re on again and then it’s postponed. There was a lot of back-and-forth that can play with emotions and interrupt our rhythm.

“They (Emmaus) played really well though and they really pushed us, which I think we needed. I said to our kids that even when you don’t play well but can win, that’s a good thing.”

Parkland (11-2 overall, 10-2 EPC) led by just two points, 27-25, with a little over two minutes left to play, and then Lindsay Berger and Talia Zurinskas combined to score their team’s next six points to seal the victory. The duo actually tallied eight of the 10 points in the final quarter and 22 of the 33 total in the game.

The game plan was mainly centered around the two, but when Berger began getting doubled in the post, Ohlson directed the offense in a different direction to try and score.

“We just spread it out a little bit and let the guards do their thing,” Ohlson said. “They were really overplaying Lindsay [Berger] and we had to use that to our advantage. So, when we would pull her away from the basket to set screens up top, our guards had easy lanes to the hoop. I thought we reacted pretty well. We’re happy to be able to leave here with a win.”

Zurinskas recorded a game-high 14 points and had two steals. Berger finished one basket shy of a double-double, totaling eight points and 12 rebounds to go along with two blocks and two steals.

Zoe Wilkinson tallied four points, while Sonya Shivok contributed three points and both Madi Siggins and Jesse Schmitt had two points for the Trojans.
