Government and religious leaders from Lehigh County held a prayer and blessing ceremony Jan. 24 outside the Agricultural Hall at the Allentown Fairgrounds, 302 N. 17th St.

The event was held to commemorate the opening of Ag Hall as a distribution center for COVID-19 vaccines beginning Jan. 25.

Lehigh County Executive Phillips Armstrong, Allentown Mayor Ray O’Connell and state Reps. Michael Schlossberg, D-132nd and Peter Schweyer, D-22nd, attended the prayer ceremony to remember and honor those who died from the COVID-19 virus.

The prayer and blessing ceremony was intended as a message of hope to Lehigh Valley residents as the COVID-19 vaccine becomes available.

Up to 500 Allentown residents will be inoculated daily. As all inoculations are scheduled ahead of time, there should be little to no waiting for the injections. This week’s schedule was filled quickly, prompting the probability of additional days for the vaccine following soon.

Allentown Health Bureau administers the Moderna vaccine, which is only for people 18 years of age and older.
