Coplay discusses borough gym reopening

At its workshop meeting Jan. 5, Coplay Borough Council discussed when the gym facilities, located in the borough hall building, should reopen for use.

Councilwoman Janet Eisenhauer started the dialogue, suggesting the gym stay closed for at least the next two months. She expressed concern for the health of the employees who work at borough hall, noting they are “trying really hard to keep our staff safe.”

Several council members recommended ways the gym could operate safely, such as limiting the number of individuals allowed at any one time and restricting the use of certain entrances to the building. Another idea was to have the gym open only after business hours.

Ultimately, council members agreed it would be safest to keep the gym closed for at least the next two months. At that time, they will reevaluate the circumstances and discuss the possibility of reopening the gym.

Council also discussed how to handle the rentals of the borough’s park pavilion for 2021. Most bookings and activities at the pavilion do not occur until May and carry on through October.

Council members determined reservations can be taken for the pavilion. However, renters will be informed a booking can be canceled if deemed necessary, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, which are subject to change throughout the year.

Councilman Steve Burker asked for permission to put the call out for any resident who may be interested in joining the borough parks and recreation board. Council approved this request.
