High school students named winners in pumpkin contest

Catasauqua High School counselors Eric Snyder and Tara Roseman wanted to keep school spirit and morale high for students this Halloween season, so they decided to have a little fun.

“We wanted to try and promote school due to the fact that half of our students are live in school and the other half are at home, learning virtually,” Snyder said.

According to Snyder, Roseman arranged for spirit dress-up days each Wednesday in October. Some of the themes included dress as your favorite staff member, 1980s day, twin day and, finally, Halloween.

Students were encouraged to participate in a pumpkin carving and decorating contest Oct. 28. Snyder, Varsity “C” Club adviser, and Roseman, Student Council adviser, waited out front of school that morning to collect the pumpkins from both in-person learning students and virtual learners and assigned them a number for the contest.

According to Roseman, they received 24 pumpkins for the contest, spanning students and staff members.

The winners were announced Oct. 29.

Winners include Kaitlyn Gruver, grade 9, most traditional; Makayla Mark, grade 9, best movie theme; Valerie Davidheiser, grade 11, best painted; Angelina Dries, grade 10, best two-sided pumpkin; Stacy Moser, grade 12, best Halloween theme; and Jordan Nonnemaker, grade 12, best detail/scariest.

All participants received a candy bar. Winners earned a $10 gift card to Wawa, according to Roseman.
