Five Hornet players score goals in win

Emmaus got goals from six different players with three of them scoring multiple goals as the Hornets downed Whitehall 13-0 in the quarterfinal round of districts. It was the third meeting of the two teams this season and the third time that the Hornets downed the Zephyrs 13-0.

The Hornets (11-0 overall) scored twice in the opening quarter and by halftime had upped their lead to 5-0. The five first half goals came from five different players, with Annika Herbine, Olivia Chase, Jenna Villeneuve, Rachel Herbine and Alexis Kociban all picking up goals.

Kociban led the team with four goals, three of them coming in the second half. Annika and Rachel Herbine both finished with three goals in the game.

Rachel Herbine picked up four of her five assists in the second half when she and Kociban hooked up on three straight goals. In fact, the tandem of Kociban and Herbine worked together to score five Emmaus goals in the game.

Kociban was the goal scorer on four of them with Herbine assisting until they switched roles to put Emmaus up 12-0. Rachel Herbine finished the scoring when she put in her third goal off an assist from Abby Burnett, who finished the game with four assists.

The Hornets and Zephyrs (5-7) had met in the quarterfinals of last year’s District 11 playoffs and Emmaus won that meeting 12-0 to end Whitehall’s season.

Up next for the Lady Hornets is another team that they defeated twice during the regular season when they face Parkland in the semis. Emmaus won both regular season meetings with the Lady Trojans (8-2) by scores of 8-1 and 6-0. Parkland was the only East Penn Conference team to even score against Emmaus, with nonconference Wyomissing Area being the only other team to hit the back of the cage.

Emmaus won its 31st straight District 11 championship last season and finished 26-1-0 overall after picking up two wins in the PIAA playoffs and finishing in the semifinals where the Hornets lost to Wilson 1-0. Wilson went on to win a state championship with a 2-1 shootout win over Lower Dauphin in the finals.
