NORTH WHITEHALL: Union UCC, Lutheran offering Trunk or Treat

BY SUSAN RUMBLE

Special to The Press

Union Lutheran Church, Schnecksville, and Union United Church of Christ, Neffs, will stage a drive-through Trunk or Treat 2-3 p.m. Oct. 31.

Children and parents will remain in their vehicles and drive along a determined route.

The Trunk or Treat parade will begin off Route 873 at the UCC church, then continue through the cemetery, move along through the Lutheran church parking lot, and then exit onto Route 873.

Members of both churches will be dressed in their best Halloween costumes along the parade route.

Participants are encouraged to dress up for the event. They will receive candy at distribution points along the way with minimal personal contact.

The Feed My Starving Children event organized by Eliot Lightner and Union United Church of Christ has been canceled for this year.

Normally held in the fall, volunteers packaged massive amounts of food for distribution to people around the world.

Pastor Kris Snyder-Samuelson reports the need for food is greater than ever, and Union UCC will find a way to continue to support this important work.

At the local level, the church has already collected 6,743 pounds of food for the Northern Lehigh Food Bank this year, along with monetary donations to support the effort.

From Union Lutheran Church, Pastor Gordon Camp commented on guidelines undertaken to prevent the spread of the virus.

“As much as we would like to eat dinner at our favorite restaurant or go to the movies or fill our currently empty sanctuary, COVID-19 does not care about our wishes,” the pastor said.

He noted the safety of all involved - members, visitors, and staff - is the primary concern.

“For now, we just don’t know when reopening will happen or what it will look like when it does,” Camp said.

Camp referred to the challenges addressed by soldiers and people on the homefront in World War II.

“Let us take a chapter from the Greatest Generation’s playbook and roll up our sleeves and do what we have to do in order to win this fight.”
