Freedom girls soccer tops Becahi

Freedom’s girls’ soccer team defeated Bethlehem Catholic twice last week by the same score, 2-1, but the Hawks aren’t letting that distract them from the progress they’ve made this season.

“We really wanted to win. We were in this game and we didn’t get the result we wanted, but we’re on our way. We practiced defending balls over our heads, so that’s what we really tried to stop today, which we did,” said Becahi’s Teighan Boyle, who scored the Hawks’ goal in the second game.

“The goalie missed a punt and shanked it pretty hard. It was about 30 yards out, I think, and I was open, I took a touch, and I chipped it right over her head, and it went in. It was a good goal.”

Earlier in the first half, Evangilia Hahalis scored for the Pates.

“I was really happy because it was my first official varsity goal. The first touches were pretty tough on this field. We’re a better team and we stepped it up in the second half and played overall better,” Hahalis said.

Freedom’s Haley Gschrey’s goal broke the tie and assured the Pates the victory with nine minutes remaining in the second half.

“Personally, I’m trying to get 100 goals, and right now I’m at 96,” she said. “We lost some great players and some height from last year, so that really made a difference but we’re trying to adjust.”

Former assistant Becahi girls’ soccer coach Brad Kratzer has taken over as head coach of the Hawks, officially, since last Wednesday, but had the team the week before, replacing Angelo Amato.

“I’ve been the acting coach for a week, and our results got better, so hopefully we can continue that momentum through the end of the year,” Kratzer said.
