Charboneau, Jobes take firsts as cross country season opens

Freedom senior Lauren Charboneau won the Pates’ girls’ cross country meet against Northampton last Tuesday, but it was the Konkrete Kids who won in team results, 20-37, at Freedom.

Charboneau’s time was 20:30.

Northampton senior Georgia Wiswesser placed second in 20:37.

“Georgia and I were pretty much in a pack, all the way up to the two-mile mark,” Charboneau said. “From the mile to the one-and-a-half, we really slowed down, and then up to the two-mile mark, I realized the pace was a little slow, so I picked it up just a little bit.”

The Kids took the next four spots, followed by Patriot runners, Eliza Fihlman who was seventh in 23:27, Aubrey Yeager who placed eighth in 23:27, and Julia Heineman who came in ninth in 23:30.

“There’s some work that needs to be done,” said Freedom coach Bob Thear. “We had some good performances. We had some not-so-good performances. Individually, I thought Lauren ran really well, first race out of the chute.”

Social distancing and mask-wearing was evident at the meet with far fewer spectators than usual. Arguably, the loudest cheering came from soccer tryouts, as runners passed by the soccer field.

“It felt good but just a little weird, very quiet,” said Charboneau. “It’s just the boys’ team cheering for you and a couple coaches, so the atmosphere feels more like a workout.”

Also last Tuesday, Liberty’s girls defeated Nazareth, 17-38.

Emily Jobes won the race for the Hurricanes with a time of 19:39. She was followed by teammates Madison Drager who came in second in 20:24, and Ella Scott who came in third in 20:40.

Mikailyn Matacavage placed fifth in 22:29, and Maddie Mumma placed sixth in 22:33, both for Liberty.
