Becahi girls tennis tops Nazareth 7-0

Bethlehem Catholic’s four doubles pair of Grace Hartman and Isabella Bautista came back from dropping their first set against Nazareth’s Megan Conklin and Emma Ricci to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, and help the Hawks shutout the Blue Eagles, 7-0 on Monday at Becahi.

“Coach [George Harmanos] asked us what we noticed after the first set, so it was more us trying to fix it for ourselves,” said Bautista. “After the second set, Coach said we did a great job but we don’t want to get too caught up in the idea that we’re doing great.”

Becahi’s four doubles has seen different combinations of players, and Hartman and Bautista are undefeated.

“We come together between every point and make sure that we’re in the right state of mind so each point is fresh,” said Hartman. “I was doing much better on volleys and being at the net and being aggressive, and she was great at down-the-line shots and getting in those small spaces.

The Hawks were up 5-2 in the third set when the Eagles won another game.

“That takes away a little of your momentum,” Hartman said, “but I think we ended pretty good.”

At third doubles, Patty Superka and Cecile Szollas defeated Jessica Rodriguez and Gianna Giacobbe, 7-5, 6-1. At second doubles, Alexa Schoenfield and Maddie Lennert defeated Chelsea Markulics and Ally Inglis, 7-6, 6-2, and at first doubles, Ella Trunzo and Amber Simmons won, 8-7.

“The first set, Chelsea was holding serve, which was one thing we needed to break in the second set, which we managed to do,” said Schoenfield. [Maddie] hits very deep so it helps me get in for a poach opportunity. She’s a good forehand; I’m a good backhand, so we don’t have to compete who’s going to get in which position on each side.”

As the match continued, the Hawks discovered Nazareth’s weak points and attacked.

“Two games came to deuce and they didn’t go our way, but my serves were a lot higher, Maddie’s serves got way more consistent, and we went a lot more to try and get more break points,” Schoenfield said.

In singles play, Cara Magliochetti defeated Maggie Lefebvre, 6-1, 6-2, Shannon Stewart defeated Angie Mancavage, 6-1, 6-4, and Taylor Adams defeated Rebecca Hahn, 6-0, 6-0.

Approaching the halfway mark of the regular season, it was recently announced that there will be District XI and PIAA State tennis tournaments with more details to come.

The Hawks are anxious to play after being on the brink of district titles last season. within the last six years, including 2020, Becahi is 70-5 in matches against other teams in the East Penn Conference.

“It’s a great conference, 18 teams, AAA schools. It’s pretty significant,” Harmanos said.
