Softball action kicked off with eight teams

Day one of the Lehigh Valley High School Softball Showcase featured eight teams and eight games played by Liberty, Salisbury, Allentown Central Catholic, Nazareth, Bangor, Freedom, Northampton, and Wilson at the Moore Township Recreational Center.

Freedom and Northampton were the only teams to win both their games.

The Patriots defeated Bangor, 3-0, and Nazareth, 8-2, and the Konkrete Kids defeated Liberty, 5-1, and Wilson, 6-2.

Liberty defeated Salisbury, 6-5, and Wilson also defeated Salisbury, 7-1.

Central defeated Nazareth, 4-2, but lost to Bangor, 12-0.

In Freedom’s game against Bangor, Kaitlin McDevitt and Julia Heineman had two hits apiece, and Gabby Glick had one.

Natalie Stannard and Brenna Ortwein had the RBIs for the Patriots.

Juliana Presto was the winning pitcher, giving up only three hits, two in the seventh inning, and the only senior to play for Freedom.

“It was really exciting to be with my team again. Everyone was so happy to be there,” said Presto. “We were determined to win.”

Presto had 11 strikeouts.

“I think my curve was working pretty well and my rise ball,” she said.

McDevitt also had three hits in Freedom’s win over Nazareth.

Abby Husser was the winning pitcher.

Two victories apiece for Freedom and Northampton meant a trip to the semifinals and final two days later at Coca-Cola Park.

“I’m very excited and very nervous,” said Presto. “Being on that field, it’s a really rare opportunity.”
