Kids send five to states

Ten Northampton wrestlers entered last weekend’s PIAA AAA NE Regional wrestling tournament with ambitions of earning a trip to Hershey for the state finals. Besides the Condomittis, three other Konkrete Kids successfully climbed the mountain.

Carson Wagner won four-straight consolation bouts to claim third place at 106 pounds and extend his freshman season. His run started with a pair of pins, the second against District XI runner-up CJ Horvath of Freedom. He then scored a reversal with 26 seconds left in his match to advance 4-3 past Zachary Jacaruso of Delaware Valley, who was ranked eighth in the state at 106. hat blood round win clinched the state berth, but he added a 12-2 major to land on the third step of the podium.

“The whole year I was thinking about trying to make it to states,” Wagner said. “With all those matches you wrestle throughout the year, it all comes down to these moments here.”

Ethan Szerencsits dropped a tough, 6-4 decision in his 132-pound semifinal to the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler, Stroudsburg’s Patrick Noonan. He rebounded with a 6-4 decision over Xavier Arner of Whitehall in the consolation semifinal and finished the tournament in style with a pin in 2:08 over Nazareth’s Blaine Wilson to take third place.

Szerencsits, a senior who had finished fifth last year, described his mindset coming into his last chance to make it to Hershey.

“Last year was tough, coming up a match short,” he said. “I was honestly pretty relaxed coming in. After getting stuck last week, no outcome could be worse than that, so I just let it hang out there and attacked.”

Blake Lambert, another senior who came up one bout short last year, earned a semifinal spot with a 10-0 decision over District 2 champion Connor Lee of Wilks-Barre Area. After dropping into the consolation bracket, he notched a 5-3 blood round decision over Blue Mountain’s Kevin Croley to earn his spot at states. He placed 4th at 220 pounds.

“It’s what I’ve been dreaming of doing my whole wrestling career and it’s finally come true,” Lambert said. “The Northampton wrestling community is great. It’s an awesome program. There’s a lot of great people and a lot of great coaches. Seth Lisa is the most amazing coach in the state.”

Colby Judd and Makei Hubert finished in fifth place at 152 and 285 respectively. Riley Gallagher earned sixth place at 182. At 160, Traisach Roland had a pair of tough losses (4-1, 2-1) after making the quarterfinals. Gunnar Wagner’s Northampton career ended with a 2-1 loss on a reversal with 12 seconds left in his bout at 113 in consolation round 3.

The K-Kids finished in third place in the team standings behind Nazareth and Bethlehem Catholic.

“We had a good weekend,” said head coach Seth Lisa. “We’re sending five guys, three underclassmen, so it’s nice to have a few of those guys returning next year. Really pleased with the effort the whole tournament.”
