Dagen Condomitti wins NE Regional gold

Jagger and Dagen Condomitti stared across the mat at a pair of familiar foes during the Parade of Champions during last weekend’s PIAA AAA NE Regional wrestling tournament at Liberty High School.

Northampton’s two regional finalists had rematches from their previous week’s bouts in the District XI finals. Jagger once again got Bethlehem Catholic’s Cole Handlovic at 145 pounds, while Dagen saw Pottsville’s Wiley Kahler at 126.

This time the results were reversed as the younger brother brought home the gold medal while Jagger settled for silver.

Dagen’s path to the final started with a fall in 40 seconds in the preliminary round and culminated with a pin of the District 12 champion in the semifinal.

His final against Kahler started out in a similar fashion to their district clash: a scoreless first period followed by an early escape in the second. This time, Dagen was able to secure the takedown that had proved so elusive when he was able to control Kahler after a scramble with 28 seconds left in the second period.

Dagen was able to escape one minute into the third period and fight off Kahler to claim the regional title.

Afterward the freshman 126 pounder explained the change in approach that made the difference.

“I think I controlled the pace more,” he said. “He’s a weird wrestler, he likes to shoot more from open and I think tying up with him slowed him down a little bit and enabled me to score off his bad shots.”

Unfortunately for Jagger, the results at 145 also flipped from the previous weekend. Handlovic was able to score a pair of first period takedowns and hang on to get the 6-4 decision.

Jagger expressed his frustration with some of the sequences at the end of the bout. “He came out a little different, a little harder,” he said. “But he started to fade and that’s where I started to pick up on the back end. I think it’s a little shady that he was grabbing onto my shoe and completely ripped the tape off. Those are positions I’m pretty good in. Usually in those scramble positions I score 99% of the time. This whole tournament they were calling stalemates a little quicker.”

He hasn’t lost sight of the larger goal.

“The big show out in Hershey, that’s the one everyone remembers,” Jagger said. “We’ll go back and change some stuff. It’s going to be a whole different match next week.”

On his brother’s winning the regional title he said, “I’m proud of him. He won a regional title before me, so I know I’m going to be hearing about that. We’re both going on to the state tournament, just like I did my freshman year. I think it’s cool.”
