Coplay Democratic Club votes to allow Whitehall officers

At its annual reorganization meeting in February, the Coplay Democratic Club (CDC) leaders advanced a by-law change, largely considered the first significant move in more than 20 years.

The change allows Democratic members in good standing from Whitehall to hold up to three offices on the eight-office leadership board. A fourth officer can be from outside the Whitehall-Coplay area. A stipulation of the change is both the office of president and vice president may only be filled by a Coplay Democrat in good standing with the current by-laws.

Expanding the officer pool is expected to widen the CDC’s influence. Reaching out to Whitehall could also increase CDC membership.

The CDC, also referred to as the Edward M. Kennedy Democratic Association, was founded in 1930 and incorporated in 1931. A 90th-year celebration is planned for later this year.

Other activities planned for 2020 are efforts to increase voter registration and turnout. Engaging and financially supporting Coplay nonprofits are also in this year’s plan.

The executive officers for 2020 are Bill Leiner Jr., president/treasurer; Todd Bandura, vice president; and Karen Shields, secretary. Trustees are James Danko, Cadie Bandura, Cynthia Leiner and Theresa Roth.

Near the end of the meeting, a spirited political discussion ensued.

“The 2020 election is the most important election since 1932,” Leiner said. “Our Constitution and freedom are on the ballot. We all work together and elect candidates who will transform America, return governing to the people.”

The next CDC meeting will be 1:30 p.m. April 26 at Paulie’s Restaurant, 1214 Chestnut St., Coplay.
