NHS boys fall to Parkland

The Northampton boys basketball team lost to Parkland 57-52 on Tuesday, ending the team’s 3-game winning streak. With two games left in the regular season, the K-Kids’ record is 12-8.

The Trojans found their range early, hitting a trio of three-pointers on their way to taking a 14-9 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Isaac Harris turned in a Kobe-esque performance, scoring all 11 of Northampton’s points, on the way to his season-high of 24. His lay-in as time expired in the half cut the deficit to 23-20.

Parkland scored the first basket of the second half to extend its lead to 5. The Kids then reeled off 7 straight points to take a 27-25 lead with six minutes remaining in the quarter.

The game was tied at 30-30 when the Trojans went on a 9-point run to claim their largest lead of the game to that point. A basket by Jon Altomare with 15 seconds left in the period cut the margin to 39-32 heading into the fourth.

Northampton scored the first 4 points of the quarter to cut the lead to three. The Trojans outscored the Kids 10-3 over the next three minutes to put the game into the cycle of fouling and free throw shooting. Parkland only missed once from the line over the final two minutes to seal the game.

Head coach Coy Stampone gave full credit to the Trojans.

“They have a lot of weapons,” he said. “They surround you with threes and then when they want to go inside, they have really good size. We had to pick our poison.”

Donte Rodriguez scored 9 points. Spencer Cole had 6. Zac Gula and Altomare had 4 each.

While the loss to Parkland is disappointing, Northampton did clinch a district playoff berth with win number 11 against Emmaus on Friday. It looks like the Kids are going to wind up with the 7 seed, which would pit them against a top team from the Steel Division in the 6A quarterfinals.

The K-Kids’ 6-8 record in the EPC leaves their conference tournament hopes hanging by a thread. There are already 7 teams with 9 or more wins in conference, so the team will have to win their final two games and hope for a favorable tiebreaker to claim the 8th and final spot.

Northampton finishes out its regular season on the road. On Friday, the team travels to Nazareth to take on the 8-11 Blue Eagles. The K-Kids won the first matchup between the teams 65-42.

The regular season finale will take place on Monday at Central Catholic. The Vikings have run off 13 wins in a row since the Kids handed them their second loss of the season, 61-50, on Dec. 17.
