Girls look for revenge this week

Northampton’s girls’ basketball team has been waiting for this week.

Beginning Tuesday, the Konkrete Kids were looking to avenge previous losses this season to both Parkland and Nazareth. They also will face Allentown Central Catholic Monday to conclude their regular season before the East Penn Conference (EPC) and district playoffs.

The two defeats are the lone blemishes on their league mark (5-2), as the Kids began the week behind Nazareth (7-0) and Parkland (6-1) in the EPC Skyline Division. They have an overall 16-3 record and a 10-3 EPC overall record.

“The girls know what kind of a week this is for them,” said Kids’ head coach Jeff Jacksits. “We didn’t shoot well in either of those losses, and they told me that it wouldn’t happen again.

“We’re not sure how we stand in leagues, but if we can win two out of the three, we should be in good shape.”

Jacksits has been pleased with the Kids’ continued balanced scoring effort throughout the season that has helped them win their last eight games.

Junior Morgan Sterner leads the Kids in scoring, averaging 11.5 points per game. Freshman Grace Lesko is averaging 9.6 and sophomore Kyle Gilliard averages 9.3. Fellow sophomore Taylor Kranzley is scoring an average of 7.1 per game. Devyn Demchak, the fifth starter, is averaging 5.4 per contest.

“I would love to see us have five players with around 10 points a piece,” added Jacksits. “We have been pretty balanced all year.

“Morgan (Sterner) has been on fire lately, and Grace (Lesko) has been getting the job done all season. Taylor (Kranzley) and Kylie (Gilliard) also have been playing well. Devyn (Demchak) has been very consistent for us.”

Along with his starters, Jacksits has been pleased with the recent production from sophomore Shaylynn Waiters and junior Taylor Sommer off the bench.

“Shaylynn (Waiters) has been out first guard off the bench this season,” said Jacksits. “She has done a nice job for us. Taylor Sommer is coming off an ACL tear from last year and she has been adjusting. She is physical and a good defender.”

Jacksits noted how his team has responded to recent pregame talks that involved letters to reveal a message.

In a recent victory against Emmaus, the message was “To Take Care of Business and Don’t Look Ahead.”

The Kids just did that in a lopsided 59-32 victory.

“We came out giving up too many points against them (Emmaus),” stated Jacksits. “They has five or six threes in the first half.

“But we came out and executed a lot better in the second half.”

With Parkland Tuesday and Nazareth Friday, the Kids’ message should be quite clear. They also have a shot to shake up the District 11 Class 6A bracket in which they are currently third behind Nazareth and Freedom.

“They know they’re looking to redeem themselves,” said Jacksits about his team. “We need to keep them (Parkland) off the boards, and look to get out and run on their big court. Nazareth has been good all year and we have them at home.

“If we can run the table, we could end up with the top spot in districts.”
