Girls defeat Whitehall

The Northampton girls basketball team completed their season sweep over Whitehall with a 59-35 win at Pete Schneider Gymnasium on Tuesday. The win was the K-Kids seventh in a row and brought their season record to 15-3.

Northampton blew the game open early with a 14-point run in the middle of the first quarter on the way to a 21-6 lead at the first break. Kylie Gilliard scored 9 of her 13 total points in the period.

After the Kids put up the first 6 points of the second quarter, it looked like the bench would see heavy action the rest of the way. However over the next four minutes, the Zephyrs unleashed a 13-point run on their way to trimming the halftime deficit to 31-21.

Head coach Jeff Jacksits lamented Whitehall getting back into the game.

“I told them about letting teams hang around,” Jacksits said. “We’re up 20 points and then all of sudden it’s down to 10 again. That’s what we said at halftime, ‘Let’s get out there and get the lead back up and keep the lead.’”

The team responded by scoring the first 9 points of the second half. Their lead never fell below 15 over the rest of the game. The score after the third quarter was 50-29.

Junior captain Morgan Sterner led all scorers with 22 points. Point guard Taylor Kranzley added 10.

Devyn Demchak recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Grace Lesko scored 3 points, pulled down 13 boards and had 2 blocks.

Sterner summed up the key to the team’s success this season.

“Chemistry,” she said. “I think that’s the most important part. Supporting each other and loving each other. Because without that, you’re not going to push each other as hard and you’re not going to want to come to practice and work as hard as we do.”

As the regular season starts to wind down, Northampton will play its next two game on the road. On Friday, they travel to Emmaus. The Kids beat the Hornets 56-21 in December. On Tuesday, the team will try to avenge one of their three losses when they play Parkland. The previous game this season saw the Trojans come out on top, 37-30. Jacksits feels that his team will play better at Parkland because the larger playing surface opens the floor and neutralizes some of the Trojans’ height advantage.
