Hockey hopes for deep run
Northampton head hockey coach Brain Ruff is following an age-old adage as his club maneuvers itself toward the upcoming postseason.
“We’re just trying to take one game at a time,” said Ruff. “We know we have Parkland at the end of the (regular) season and we have a few games before them.
“We really believe we have enough talent to go the distance, but we can’t look too far ahead.”
Beginning this week, the Konkrete Kids were in third place in the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League (LVSHL) behind undefeated Parkland (12-0-1) and Phillipsburg (10-2-0).
The Kids recently avenged an earlier loss to Phillipsburg (4-2) with a 3-2 victory Jan. 3. However, the Kids suffered a 4-2 defeat to sixth-place Nazareth three days later.
“The P-Burg win was a good one of us,” said Ruff. “They were undefeated at the time and they have really played well. It gave the kids a confidence boost against them, and there is a good chance we will see them again in the playoffs.”
Ruff has been impressed with the balanced scoring as well as the budding production of his relatively young club.
Braden Pychinka is among the league leaders in scoring and lead the Kids with 12 goals and seven assists for 19 points.
Among the other top scorers are Myles Rutt (7-5-12), Aidan Carey (5-4-9) and Alyssa Wruble (1-7-8).
Goalie Noah Smargiassi has logged all the minutes for the Kids this winter, posting a stingy 1.92 goals against average and a .981 save percentage.
“We have a lot of sophomores out there, and we are in good shape with our scoring,” said Ruff. “We have a number of guys who have stepped up and help spread out pour scoring.
“We just don’t have one line that is doing all the scoring for us. We have had three or four lines scoring for us, and that’s a good thing.”
Along with the multipronged offensive attack, Smargiassi has been a steady force.
“He (Smargiassi) has carried us all year,” added Ruff. “He played well last year, and he hasn’t missed a beat. He really has done a great job all year and has made plenty of big saves.”
Being a surprise team to the make the league finals last year, Ruff anticipates his team to be on the same course. The Kids have a hiatus until they play Southern Lehigh Jan. 27 followed by Central/Beca Jan. 31 and Parkland Feb. 7
“I really think we can make a deep run,” said Ruff. “I have been telling these guys all along. We can’t afford to lose to any of the teams beneath us and then get ready for Parkland and the postseason.”
