The Emmaus Green Hornets wrestling program has performed well early, earning a 6-1 overall record and a 1-1 East Penn Conference mark in its first seven matches.

In the Hornets’ Dec. 13 EPC win over Pocono Mountain East, coach Thad Smith’s club received good efforts from Marco Albanese at 106, who claimed a 2-0 decision over Mikey Hollar. Geovanni Lainez took care of PME’s Josh Marrero in a fall at 5:45. At 152, Jack Brion flexed his muscles over Khalif Ransom in a fall at 3:21, while Nicholas Ruggiero took care of Joe Evers in the 170-pound class in a 1:45 fall. The always tough Caden Wright handled Pocono Mountain East’s Owen Franco in a fall in 1:03.

Emmaus won its six other matches that night on forfeits.

The Green Hornets stormed through the Case Flynn Duals at Pottsville High School on Saturday, Dec. 7, winning the team title with a 5-0 record. They went through most of the competition with relative ease. Only a tough Tunkannock squad provided a stern test, with Emmaus claiming a 39-34 win. The Green Hornets took care of the tournament’s host school - the Crimson Tide - with a 45-25 decision, Wyoming Valley 60-18, Shippensburg 52-13 and Kutztown in 81-0 victory.

The season’s only loss through the first two weeks was a 46-12 result to Northampton.

Smith has noted that he was much emerging talent this year. One of those young men is Kordell Waiters. During his match with Pottsville’s Wiley Kahler on Dec. 7, Waiters took control early, and won in 1:03 on a fall. Another tough customer is heavyweight James Santichen. Wrestling at 285 pounds, he took care of matters with a 1:41 fall over the Crimson Tide’s R.J. Quinn. Another big man has been Cody Lafaver at 220 pounds. He handled Pottsville’s Jacob Mull in a 3-1 decision.

Smith said earlier this year in an interview his team had a lofty agenda.

“Our goal is to be top five in the league and have a strong showing in team districts and have several individuals quality for the state tournament in March,” Smith said. “It will take continue dedication and hard work...We need to take are of small details and eliminate mistakes.”

Scheduling quality out-of-conference opponents was also part of their strategy to attain excellence.

“We added to our schedule to get tougher opponents to help us reach our goals,” the coach said.
