Parkland’s Wu never quits

By the end of the 2019 girls tennis season, Parkland coach Mike Hingston was in a tough spot. He had ran out of adjectives to describe Johanna Wu.

Throughout her senior campaign, Wu used her superior skill, superb strategy and laser-like focus to play solid tennis. But above all, she never said die.

“This girl is just such a competitor,” said Hingston earlier this season. “She does not give up”

Not giving up in pursuit of a worthy goal can create memories. Wu’s final high school season proved to be memorable, as she finished as runner up in the District 11 Class 3A singles finals Oct. 3 after a sensational season as the Trojans’ number one singles player.

Wu has received a lot more out of tennis than just serves and volleys.

“The reason why I enjoy tennis so much is because of my coaches and my friends,” she said. “Everyone has supported me so much along the way. No matter whether I win or lose, tennis is such an enjoyable sport.”

Wu had plenty of enjoyment in the district singles tournament. In the opening round, Wu defeated Nazareth’s Sarah Lazaechak 6-1, 6-2. Then Wu took care of Stroudsburg’s Rachel Traub 6-1, 6-0 in the second round. In her quarterfinal matchup, Wu defeated Parkland teammate Leah Zolotareva 6-1, 6-0. In the semis, she downed Nazareth’s Alyssa Landolfi 6-0, 3-0.

In a classic final, Wu battled Stroudsburg’s Paraskevi Briegel Oct.3 for three hours, only to lose a heartbreaking three-set match 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 5-7.

Some of that heartbreak was dispelled eight days later, when the Trojans beat Southern Lehigh 4-0 at Lehigh University for the District 11 Class 3A team title.

“It was really crazy, because out of the last three years we never ever won as a district team,” Wu said following Parkland’s district team championship.

Wu’s brother played tennis at Parkland and “definitely inspired” Wu to play tennis in high school.

“She stays in the moment out there,” said Hingston of Wu.

During 2019, Johanna Wu certainly had plenty of tennis moments, even if her coach ran out of adjectives to describe them.
