Emmaus tops Trojans in EPC semifinal

The Parkland and Emmaus boys soccer teams have a habit of playing more than the usual 80-minute game.

Over the past few years the teams have needed overtime to settle their rivalry games and Tuesday’s East Penn Conference semifinal went into two extra periods before the Hornets came out on top 2-1.

The No. 2 seed Hornets got a first-half goal from Andrew Gaines, while the Trojans’ Alex Wilsterman scored a first-half goal for his team.

Gaines, who recently returned from injury, netted the game winner in the second overtime to push Emmaus (17-3-0 overall) into the league title game Thursday against top-seeded Liberty.

Parkland (15-5 overall) will have about a week off before the district playoffs begin.

Goal keeper Victor Baran stopped 12 shots for Parkland, while the Hornets’ Chris Buck made one save in the win.

Parkland reached the league semifinal game by beating Whitehall 2-1 in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
