K-Kids top WHS, make EPC playoffs

The Northampton field hockey team claimed their point against Cement Belt rival Whitehall with a convincing 5-2 win at the Zephyr Sports Complex on Tuesday night.

The Kids had good early pressure as the forced four penalty corners in the first six minutes of the game.

Morgan McIntire cashed in on the fourth one with the game’s first goal at the 24:19 mark.

Despite a total of 6 corners and 11 shots on goal, Northampton had to settle for a 1-0 lead at the half.

The Kids kept up the pressure and the first penalty corner of the second half bore fruit as Ashley Diodoardo capitalized for an unassisted goal six minutes and 17 seconds into the half.

Whitehall got back into the game at the 20:15 mark when a high, arcing pass toward goal took an unusual hop and was put into the cage.

The Zephyr momentum was short-lived as Diodoardo scored 50 seconds later, on yet another penalty corner, this time assisted by McIntire.

Olivia Lorah provided an insurance goal at 10:09 that was assisted by Laura Tucker.

Whitehall cut the deficit to 4-2 by converting their fifth penalty corner with 6:39 left in the game.

Tucker picked up her second assist of the game when she set up Diodoardo’s first-ever hat trick at the 2:54 mark to complete the scoring.

The win wrapped up a very successful 14-4 regular season campaign for the Kids. Despite the success, Northampton earned only the sixth seed for the EPC tournament due to losing a tiebreaker with Liberty based on the head-to-head meeting that the Hurricanes won 3-1 in the first game of the season.

The EPC playoffs kick off on Saturday. The official brackets and times had not yet been released, but Easton locked up the third seed and will host the Kids. The tentative start time for the game is 11 a.m. The Rovers won at Northampton 3-1 on Sept. 21.
