Emmaus golfers win D-11 title

Emmaus golfers took home another team title Monday at The Steel Club in Hellertown, while junior Michelle Cox picked up her first District 11 gold medal with a 1-over par round 73 and sophomore Matt Zerfass finished second in the boys tournament.

Cox, a three-time East Penn Conference champ, earned the district title after finishing second in the tournament last year and third as a freshman.

“With the exception of the first few holes I think I played great,” she said. “Postseason I haven’t played all that well in the past. This year I’m playing decently. Here it was just the first few holes and after that it was good. I’ve just got to string a round together where everything comes together.”

Cox was four shots over par through eight holes before regrouping to shoot three-under par on the back nine.

“I was hitting the ball all over the property,” she said. “I got it straightened out, but I just need to dial in my wedges and start making some putts. I didn’t really leave myself in good places. All in all it’s OK, but we’ve got to get it tightened up and get better.”

Zerfass round got off to a solid start after a birdie on the first hole and a one-over par 37 on the front nine. He started the back nine on fire and was two-under par with four holes to play. He made a double-bogey on his 15th hole and a bogey on the last hole to finish at one-over par 73.

“I think I played great,” he said. “I think I did great with the driver and the wedges. Those definitely got me going.”

Zerfass will make his second trip to regionals. Last season he was one under the cut line to advance to states with a few holes to play, but missed the cut.

“That was a tough one for me to take,” he said. “It’s OK though. I bounced back this year.”

The Hornets shot a team score of 304 to earn the team title over Liberty (315), Blue Mountain (357) and Nazareth (423).

John Keba shot 77 and Aiden LeBlanc shot 81 to round out the team score. Nate Seidel (85) and Colin Wong (89) also played in the tournament as the Hornets had six individual district qualifiers this season.

The team moves on to take on LaSalle College High School in a state team match. The winner of that will go on to regionals and potentially states. Last season the Hornets couldn’t get past the District 12 champs. This year they have a deeper team.

“Last year we were one step short,” said Cox. “We just didn’t play our best and that’s why we lost. This year, we can go to states. I’m excited.”

Parkland’s Trevor Grimm won this year’s District 11 Class 3A boys title with an even-par 72. Liberty’s Matt Vital was third with 74.

Pleasant Valley’s Mary Scully and Saucon Valley’s Emma Shelby both shot 90 to tie for second behind Cox in the girls tournament.

Schuylkill Haven’s Albe Evans shot 82 and beat Ben Ortwein (Notre Dame Green Pond) in a playoff for the Class 2A boys title.

Emily Wright of Central Catholic shot 87 to take the 2A girls gold medal over Moravian Academy’s Grace Sanborn (94).

Palmerton won the Class 2A team title with a score of 349, three shots better than Moravian Academy (352).
