K-Kids get big victory over ESS
It was the kind of game Northampton head coach Kyle Haas has been expecting. And the timing of it couldn’t have been better.
Overall, it was one of those nights that Northampton people will talk about foe a long time. The Konkrete Kids celebrated the past, the present, and possibly some of the future.
With members of the unbeaten 1955 and 1956 teams playing their role in the evening, the Kids took a major step forward toward an East Penn Conference (EPC) North title and beyond with a resounding 51-21 victory over East Stroudsburg South Sept. 27 that gave them some elbow room in the race and raised their record to 5-1.
“This was everything we talked about,” said head coach Kyle Haas. “They kids played well in all phases and they understood the ramifications of the game. We had the former championship teams there and the crowd was electric and big.
“They went out and really took care of business. We outworked them, and our kids know they have to replicate that type of effort each week. To win a game a like that…the feeling is euphoric.”
Quarterback Joe Kerbacher produced six touchdowns, four through the air and two on the ground. He completed 11 of 15 passes for 121 yards and ran for 72 yards on 14 carries.
“If he (Kerbacher) can throw the ball on the money, we will be hard to defend through the pass,” said Haas. “He sees a little sliver and he’s 15 yards down field. His moves from side to side and acceleration is something to see.”
Kerbacher saw his team hitting on all cylinders.
“It was a great team win,” He said. “Being this is our second year under coach Haas, we were ready to play in a big game. Last year we lost a big game to Stroudsburg because we weren’t ready yet.
“The defense stepped up big time this week. We challenged the line to play big this week and they did. We all made big plays.”
Haas also liked the play of the line and the overall defensive effort.
“The way the line played was a positive,” he said. “They are becoming more cohesive and more confident. Their play is very important.
“Defensively, we were relentless. I really didn’t expect an outcome like this. They had the league’s leading rusher and he had 35 yards. We were tackling better and we came right at them. Offensive coordinator Mike Feifel and defensive coordinator Shawn Daignault did a great job.”
Ironically, the Kids will travel to Stroudsburg Friday, facing team that knocked them off their magical ride last season after they had posted five consecutive lopsided victories toward the EPC North title.
“They (Stroudsburg) have two good running backs and they rotate two quarterbacks, one who throws well and the other who runs well,” said Haas. “Dimitri Rojas is a running back who is extremely talented and hurt us last year, and Brandon Burrell is the other running back and he runs very hard.
“They are run heavy and do the things they do best. We know now that we have a bull’s-eye on our backs, and it will come down to who wants it more.”
With their latest win, the bar has been raised for the Kids. They still have challenges ahead with Allen, Pocono Mountain East and Whitehall.
“We won’t be able to cruise,” stressed Haas. “We have to play every game like it is a championship game. We’re only as good as out next play The good teams play at that kind of level every week.
“Now, we have to play at that level every week. There are other big games ahead, and I like the excitement. You can see it with the kids at practice. We have to be ready to play at the next level, and these kids have bought into that.”
