Volleyball team beats Parkland for first time

The Northampton volleyball team has been making a little history in recent matches.

Last week, the team defeated always-powerful Parkland in five sets, jumping out to a 2-0 lead with 25-20 and 25-23 wins in sets one and two.

The Trojans seemingly took back momentum, though, winning sets three and four by scores of 25-13 and 25-18, respectively. But the Kids battled back and won the fifth set 15-11. It was the first time in program history the volleyball team was able to knock off Parkland.

Beating a juggernaut like the Trojans can be a program-changing event.

“As a team, we are extremely excited with our success in beating Parkland,” said head coach Jessica Finlayson. “Being able to contend with these powerhouse teams is always the goal for our Northampton program. Many people in the Lehigh Valley are reaching out and sharing how great they think these girls are doing.”

Junior Lindsey Nemeth had 18 kills and junior Mya Cascario had 30 digs as the libero in the win over PHS. Sydney Heffner had 36 assists, 4 kills, and 16 digs in the win.

More recently, Northampton defeated Stroudsburg 25-21, 25-13, 25-15.

In that match, senior Heffner notched 1,000 assists for her career. Brooke Rockovits and Nemeth both had 11 kills each.

Northampton defeated Pocono Mountain East 25-9, 25-22, 19-25, 25-12.

Molly Hughes made her debut on varsity with 20 assists and 2 aces. Freshman Payton Reuber had 8 kills and Alexa Barowski had 10 kills.

For the Kids, their success this season started way back in the offseason.

“These girls have worked hard through all of preseason and all of their matches so far in order to make a name for themselves,” Finlayson said. “The team works together on the court and because of that, we win more often. I’m very excited to see what the rest of the season holds.”

The Kids played Liberty Wednesday night, after Press deadlines, and then Nazareth Thursday night.
