Harriers look to stay strong heading to postseason

Northampton head cross country coach Dan Benner doesn’t want to be presumptuous about his team, but the Konkrete Kids already have made some strides.

“We are still early on in the season, but we have gotten off to a strong start,” said Benner. “We opened the season by hosting an invitational at Bicentennial Park. It was a very competitive meet again this season with 37 teams and over 1,000 athletes competing.”

At the invitational, five Kids earned medals on the day, and they all posted their personal best times of the year.

Georgia Wiswesser was third in a time of 19:20; Amber Poniktera, seventh, 19:44;, Zeke Colyer, (20th, 16:43; Vince Gallagher, 24th, 16:51;, and Owen Nahf, 27th, 16:58).

Also with personal best times on the day were Wyatt Poniktera (18:22), Johnny Breslin (18:41), Nick Amato (18:57), Marcus Newhart (19:05), and Nico Quinones (19:06).

Wiswesser, a junior, went to states the past two years, and she appears to be on pace to reach that mark again.

“Georgia (Wiswesser) has been really strong so far,” said Benner. “I would be shocked if he doesn’t make it to states.”

In their opening meet, the Kids hosted Allentown Central Catholic, Emmaus, and Whitehall on Sept. 10. The boys went 3-0, and the girls finished the afternoon 2-1.

In that meet, the top-seven boys’ finishers were Zeke Colyer, Owen Nahf, Vince Gallagher, Isaiah Tyler, Wyatt Poniktera, Johnny Breslin, and Nick Amato. The top-seven girls’ finishers were Amber Poniktera, Brianna Tyler, Olivia Rigo, Reia Sanchez, Carley Maldonado, Madison Berger, and Ellie Spencer.

The Kids had their second meet Tuesday afternoon in a quad meet at Easton with Allen, Dieruff, and Parkland.

Northampton also notched an impressive victory over Emmaus this season and one that can further catapult them down the stretch.

“We always consider Emmaus, Parkland and Easton are among the top teams in the conference,” said Benner. “That win as a good step in the right direction.

“We feel we have a good core of boys who can run against a lot of teams in the area. Our girls also have really developed a good unit.

“After the start that we have had so far, expectations are high going forward the rest of the season. Ultimately, the main goal is to do as well as possible at the district championship meet.”
