Emmaus shuts down Pleasant Valley
A very wise football man once said statistics are for losers.
That may or may not be true, statistically speaking.
The Pleasant Valley Bears (0-4) ran twice the amount of plays from scrimmage (62 to 31) as the Emmaus Green Hornets (3-1) during last Friday night’s game at East Penn School District Stadium. Pleasant Valley also lost the game 41-0. The Bears were overmatched, which is not a statistic, but is almost certainly a fact.
How did the Hornets declaw the Bears? Let’s try quickly. This game was over after 12 minutes.
The Hornets racked up a 21-0 lead after one quarter of play. A big reason why was nifty quarterback Jacob Moyer, who statistically had a superior football game. Twelve times he attempted passes, and nine of those tosses found the mark for a 75 percent completion rate.
But the stats get better, much better. Moyer gained 179 yards on those nine passes, for a 19.9 yard average per completion. Another fact: three of the nine receptions went for touchdowns. The first, which gave Emmaus a 14-0 lead, came in the first quarter and traveled only five yards to wide receiver Bryan Bertsch, who stands at 5-feet, 10-inches.
Moyer’s second foray into the end zone occurred in the third quarter and involved none other than Adam Heiserman. It went 23 yards to register a 34-0 lead. Muscle-man Heiserman is also an outstanding defender, often at or near the top of the stat sheet for tackles from his middle linebacker spot.
In the Pleasant Valley game, Heiserman made four tackles and assisted on one other when he wasn’t whooping it up in the end zone.
The junior quarterback’s final touchdown pass occurred in the third quarter and went 83 yards to wide receiver Jameel Sanders. It was the game’s final tally. Sanders was the colonel in this one, finishing with 110 yards on two receptions.
Moyer is the new Green Hornet general, but Emmaus had an army of heroes in the Pleasant Valley game. Carrying the Emmaus ground attack was running back Brandon Camire, who gained 115 yards on nine carries and three touchdowns. Camire is great runner, but was the beneficiary of improved offensive line play in this one.
The Emmaus defense did not rest in shutting out the Bears. For the most part, Emmaus defenders were just stronger physically than their counterparts from Pleasant Valley.
Hornet linebackers did a good job reading plays quickly and effectively flying to the ball, discarding blockers who might be in their way. Their tackling also improved after being only so-so during the first three games. Jared Groller led the way with six tackles and five assists.
So dominant was the Emmaus defense that in spite of running 62 plays from scrimmage, the Bears gained only 128 yards for an average of just two yards per play.
Who was the wise football man who uttered the aforementioned quote? Bill Belichick.
