Coplay 150th celebration in final stages
At its meeting Sept. 10, Coplay Borough Council announced the final two events in the borough’s 150th anniversary celebration.
First up is the Coplay pub crawl Sept. 21. There is a cost to participate. You get a wristband, a poker card from each tavern and VIP privileges. The crawl starts 3:30 p.m. You can get wristbands at the taverns or at the gazebo at the borough’s Community Plaza, North Second and Chestnut streets.
There is an order of participation. Start at Samuel Owens Restaurant and Bar, 128 Chestnut St. The crawl continues on to 2nd Street Tavern, 33 N. Second St.; then to American Club of Coplay, 300 Cherry St.; and ends at Coplay Saengerbund, 205 S. Fifth St. There is a grand prize based on the final poker hands and prizes from each of the bars.
Get your poker cards turned in by 8 p.m. to be entered to win.
Closing ceremonies for the borough’s 150th anniversary will be held at Coplay Saengerbund Oct. 19. Details will be announced closer to the event.
When all the fun is over, Councilman Stephen Burker will tally up revenues from Community Days and the pub crawl and report the values back to council in October.
In other business, Councilwoman Janet Eisenhauer reported the status of the Coplay Police Department pension fund is good. The system is rated highly by the auditors.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection offered excess binders it had to the school district. The district received more than 300 binders.
Dave Harrington stopped by council to announce that he was running for Lehigh County commissioner.
Richard Hess asked council for some direction on replacing the nativity scene outside the municipal building. The borough received correspondence from an anti-religious group that declared the nativity scene as an endorsement by the borough of one religion. One option is to combine the nativity scene with other religious and secular symbols. Hess will work with the solicitor and council to determine what will satisfy the legal requirements.
Council listened to a complaint over parking along Second Street. The sports analytics business continues to expand and is taking over many of the available parking spaces, it was reported. Coplay Mayor Dean Molitoris will discuss the situation with the business owner.
