Trojan girls tennis wins first nine matches
The day before the Parkland girls tennis season, head coach Mike Hingston said his team would likely be - if nothing else - consistent in its approach to the sport. If things went well, he hoped Parkland would be among the top three or four teams in the East Penn Conference.
Nine games into the season, the Lady Trojans have made Hingston a prophet. With a 9-0 record, they certainly have been consistent and they definitely are among the top three or four teams in the EPC.
“I knew that we would have a strong team,” said Hingston. “But there’s a lot of tennis to play. We can’t get too happy right now.”
Parkland’s number one singles player Joanna Wu has been essentially unbeatable. She lost for the firs time in 2019 in the season’s ninth match against Stroudsburg. Until then, she was a tennis machine.
“She continues to be a great team leader,” said Hingston. “She just continues to battle every match.”
Number two singles player Jessica Tseo has won every match. She had a good win Sept. 7 against Wilson West Lawn in one of her most challenging matches of the young season. Two days before that, she defeated Stroudsburg’s Vasilia Briegel 7-5, 6-0.
“Jess is the heart and soul of this team,” her coach said.
Then there is the feel good story of the young season in freshman Leah Zolotareva.
“She just wins every match,” Hingston said. Case in point, she easily handled Stroudsburg’s Rachel Traub 6-1, 6-0 during their contest. “Leah does not get rattled and is more mature than her years.”
The doubles teams have also played well for the scarlet and gray. One duo which has been outstanding has been Punya Bhasin and Emma Halpin. They expertly dismantled Stroudsburg’s Ratika Mamidela and Ivana Karataseva 6-2, 6-1.
“So far, so good, they haven’t lost a set,” their coach said.
Another Parkland success story has been the tandem of freshman Erin Joo and Anshika Gup who have played solid tennis all season. Case in point was a 6-0,6-0 demolition of Emma Schomberg and Katie Hosko of Stroudsburg. Two other doubles teams - Sophia Lee and Maya Paul along with Kaila Miles and Anabel Stein have also done the job. Lee and Paul also pitched their own shutout Sept. 5 against Stroudsburg’s Sydney Runkel and Olivia Waszkielewicz 6-0, 6-0.
